While I'm at it, I'm interested to know how this board feels about Italian Armour and AFV's in WWII.

Results (total votes = 33):
Fiat-Ansaldo Carro Armato P.40 (26ton/75mm Heavy Tank) 9 / 27.3%

Fiat-Ansaldo Semovente M42 da 75/18 Assualt Gun 5 / 15.2%

Semovente M41M da 90/53 SPG/Tank Destroyer 10 / 30.3%

Semovente M42L da 105/25 Basotto Heavy Assualt Gun 8 / 24.2%

Autocannone da 90/53 on the Lancia 3 RO truck chassis 1 / 3.0%

What were the standard engagement ranges of the semoventi 90/53 anyways? If I crewed that I would want to be as far away as possible.

The Ansaldo 90/53, or the 90mm L.58 had a performance similar to the German 88 FlaK gun 36/37. The 58 comes from the Italian system of barrel measurement, which only accounted for the rifled section, unlike the other European countries which also measured the smoothbore section. The 88mm could defeat the frontal armor of a Cromwell or Sherman at approx. 1800m. In fact the Italians modified some 90/53 to use 88mm rounds without a noticeble differnce in the results obtained. Here's some data, the 90/53 using an A.P. round could penetrate 206mm of homogenous armor at 0 degrees inclination at 1000m -it was a powerful indeed-. The 90 mm L.58 Semovente da 90/53 had a shield, so there was some protection, although not a whole lot. The 90/53 tank destroyer was designed to be used in screening actions or ambush and operating together with armor.

In comparison (@1000m):
The 75 mm L.38 Breda 75/34 Tank Gun :
A.P. 90 mm
E.P. "Effeto Pronto" 120 mm

(Main armament of the Carro Armato Pesante Fiat/Ansaldo P40 heavy tank, and the Semovente 75/34 mounted on M42 and M43 hulls.)

75 mm Breda 75/46 M.34 Anti-Tank Gun
A.P. 115 mm
E.P. "Effeto Pronto" 120 mm

Ah! give me one of those wonderful "Sahariana" Long Range SPA vehicles! With its near 100 km/hour speed, its 1.000 km. range, its 4 steering /driving wheels! Armed with anything you can think of, from 47 mm AT to 20 and even 37 mm AA automatic cannon. Perhaps it is because I like deserts, but I am getting lyrical about it!

It seems the new IT tanks types were always 6-12 months too late. Although the reliance on the 47/32 gun was an problem also, mind you GB stayed with the 2pdr too long also :)

ie. One main fault was not making a Semovente with long 75mm earlier. I guess the blame ultimately goes to the armaments office.

If i had to choose the Semovente 75/46 would be my choice.
