GREETINGS!

I’m humbly seeking assistance in putting together an Italian OOB for it’s occupation forces in the Balkans at the time of the German invasion of Russia (22 June 1941)

From: “The Forgotten Axis” by J. Lee Ready (pages: 53-54) I quote:
“The Italians were more realistic. They stationed 16 Divisions in their sector.....even though their divisions were little better equipped than the German ones. The Italian 2nd Army occupied Western Slovenia and defended Dalmatia with 8 Divisions while the Italian 9th Army occupied Montenegro with 8 Divisions. A further 4 Divisions of the 9th Army were left behind in Italian occupied Albania."
Further along in the book it mentions that 12 divisions, of the Italian 11th Army were stationed in Greece at this time.

From this start, and other sources, the OOB you see below is what I’ve been able to piece together so far. Any help that anyone can give in editing this information would be very much appreciated!

ITALIAN OCCUPATION FORCES in YUGOSLAVIA:

**SECOND (Italian) ARMY:
Army Reserves:
- 1 (Ital) Fast.Div. “E.di.Savoia” [operating in XI Corps area]
- 2 (Ital) Fast.Div. “E.F.T.di Ferro” [operating in V Corps area]

*XI (11) (Ital) Corps:
- 14 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Isonzo”
- 21 (Ital) Inf.Div. “G.di Sardegna”

*V (05) (Ital) Corps:
- 13 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Re”
- 57 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Lombardia”

*XVIII (18) (Ital) Corps:
- 12 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Sassari”
- 15 (Ital) Inf.Div “Bergamo”

*VI (06) (Ital) Corps:
- 32 (Ital) Mtn.Inf.Div. “Marche”

NOTE: “The Forgotten Axis” mentions 8 divisions with 2nd Army – I’ve found 9??

NINTH (Italian) ARMY:
*two divisions are mentioned as being stationed in districts of Yugoslavia annexed to Albania:
- ? what unit.
- ? what unit.

*XIV (14) (Ital) Corps:
- 5 (Ital) Alp.Div. “Pusteria”
- 19 (Ital) Mtn.Inf.Div “Venezia”
- 48 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Taro”
- 18 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Messina”

NOTE: This would add up to 6 of the 8 divisions mentioned in “The Forgotten Axis”, which would leave me 2 short!

*four divisions are mentioned as being left behind to occupy Albania:
- ? what unit.
- ? what unit.
- ? what unit.
- ? what unit.

The only information I have for the occupation forces in Greece is the original OOB for the April 1941 invasion:

ITALIAN OCCUPATION FORCES in GREECE!

**ELEVENTH (Italian) ARMY:

*VIII (08) (Ital) Corps:
- 22 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Cacciatori d. Alpi”
- 5 (Ital) Alp.Div. “Pusteria”
- 59 (Ital) Mtn.Inf.Div. “Cagliari”
- 51 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Siena”
- 47 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Bari”

*XXV (25) (Ital) Corps:
- 2 (Ital) Mtn.Inf.Div. “Szorzesca”
- 23 (Ital) Mtn.Inf.Div. “Ferrara”
- 37 (Ital) Mtn.Inf.Div. “Modena”
- 11 (Ital) Mtn.Inf.Div. “Brennero”
- 7 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Lupi d. Toscana”
- 58 (Ital) Inf.Div. “Legnano”
- 3 (Ital) Alp.Div. “Julia”

NOTE: The above adds up to 12 divisions. But, are they the right ones for June of 1941?
You’ll notice that the 5th Alpine Division “Pusteria” is listed as being in Yugoslavia and Greece at the same time?

Thanking you, in advance, for your help!

Best regards:

Sabre,
The italian occupation of Balkans was structured dividing territory between corps and frequent moving of divisions between corps.
So you have to specify correctly a date when you want to ask for an OOB.

I can give you a complete OOB for 2nd Army at June 5th, 1941. it comes by official sources of Italian Army Staff:

V Corps (north Dalmatia):
13th Infantry Division "Re"
57th Infantry Division "Lombardia"

VI Corps (south Dalmatia)
12th Infantry Division "Sassari"
15th Infantry Division "Bergamo"
32nd Infantry Division "Marche"
52nd Autotrasportabile Division "Torino"

XI Corps (Slovenia)
14th Infantry Division "Isonzo"
21st Infantry Division "Granatieri di Sardegna"

Celere Corps (dislocation unspecified)
1st Celere Division
2nd Celere Division
3rd Celere Division

About greece, albania and montenegro, I got the complete list of divisions but not thier correct dependences fo same date.

ask for any need

Hello friend Lupo!

Sorry, I thought I was clear on the date in my first sentence?

I’m humbly seeking assistance in putting together an Italian OOB for it’s occupation forces in the Balkans at the time of the German invasion of Russia (22 June 1941)

THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION, as always! Every little piece of the puzzle helps!

Best regards to you -

Hi Lupo:

If you have a list of all the divisions in these areas (for 22 June 1941, or even 05 June 1941) it would be a help.
By process of elimination I might be able to figure out their commands.
As I said before - every little bit helps.

thanks -

Lupo, Lupo, Lupo!

You are the man! :)
Thanks for the information friend!

I didn't think XVIII Corps should be shown in 1941 Orbat!
I had conflicting sources but my notes showed it controlling 1st and 2nd Black Shirt Divs. and 2nd Libyan Colonial Div. up to joining 2nd Army in early 1942.

Greetings "asiaticus"!

Thanks for the info.!

If I'm not mistaken your information comes from:
"Men-at-Arms Series - Axis Forces in the Balkans".

I have it and used it as part of my first stepping stones in attempting to piece together the complete Axis OOB for 22.06.41. It paints a pretty broad picture and, I for one, found it a little hard to decipher. Friends, here at Commando and also at A.H.F and Feldgrau, have noted that this information is not 100% accurate. This I can understand as I've been compiling all the data I've been receiving on an Excel Spreadsheet and even this has given my computer a headache.
However, going back just now and quickly perusing your data, I see where I've lost a few higher HQs in the shuffle!
I''m 95% sure of WHAT divisions were in the Balkans between 05 and 22 June 1941, it's placing them under their proper Corps and Armies that's giving me fits. As has been noted by others, the Italian command there was in a state of flux during June 41 and it's hard to nail down locations.
Friend Lupo has graciously supplied me with a complete Italian OOB for all other theaters on 05.06.41, yesterday, so by process of elimination, and going back over your info. above, I hope to have another updated OOB for June ready sometime in the next 48 hours.

When at first you don't succeed..............etc.
Thanks anyway for your assistance - it's appreciated!
My very best regards -

SO – One more try at this!
Here's the updated version (and just about final I think) of the Italian Orbat for the Balkans, as close to Barbarossa as I can figure out!
And, again, it isn’t perfect – but darn near I think!

*FEEL FREE TO COMMENT ON MY MISTAKES!

LUPO – sorry, but I still can’t find where the XVII Corps and “Special” Corps fit into this picture. I know you don’t have the XIV Corps mentioned, should the XIV be the XVII? – I don’t know? As for the “Special” Corps, I think it was disbanded after the initial invasion – but, again, I’m not positive! – thanks for your help though!
