Hi friends,
I am desperately searching memoirs of participants in Graziani's early offensive in Egypt and the Operation Compass which followed. I'm interested in both Italian and British memoirs, at all level (officers, and privates).

Hi,
the only italian memories about Op. Compass I am aware of are the followings:

Murroni, Ezio, Bardia, Castaldi, Milano, 1958 (Reprinted by ESA, Cagliari, 1982).
Murroni was committed to the headquarter of Bergonzoli command and he describes the Bardia siege and the following temptative to escape towards Tobruk.

Bigonzoni, Gabriele, Ex uomini, Tiber, Roma, 1956
The autor was a M11/39 tank leader and in the first 30 or 40 pages he tells the short and tragic hiastory of his batallion; the great part of the book is devoted to the captivity description.

Bonzi, Bruno, Diario di Guerra e di prigionia 1939-1947, Casanova, Faenza, 2006
The autor was a Camicia Nera of "XXVIII Ottobre" Blackshirts Division; here again only the first 40-50 pages are devoted to the North Africa theatre, otherwise the remaining pages contain PoW memories.

I hope this can help you.
Bye
Graziano

Hi Graziano,
I tried to find Murroni's book but unsuccesfully. Since I'm not a master in book-searching on the web do you have any idea of where I can find it???

I saw it listed as available from a number of Sardinian libraries. If you prefer to buy it, try and ask Libreria Militare in Milan.

Dear Guardia Reale,
sorry for not responding to you earlier, but I saw that Gian replied with better informations than what I could have done myself.
About british memories on Compass operation, I didn't find much.
Here what I found in my notes:
Clarke, Dudley, The Eleventh at War, Michael Joseph, London, 1952 (11th Hussars, not read yet so I can't say more)
Forty, George, Leakeys’ Luck, Sutton, Stroud, 1999 (1st RTR, some pages on Compass)
Wilson, Edward C., Press on regardless: the story of the Fifth Royal Tank Regiment in WWII, Sutton, UK, 2003 (not read yet so I can't say more)

Not memories, but should have something about Compass:
Baynes, John, The Forgotten Victor: General Sir Richard O’Connor, Brassey’s, London, 1989 [Reprint]
Forty, George, General O’Connor’s Desert Triumph The first Victory, Spellmont, Tunbridge Wells, 1990
Stevens, G.R., Story of 4th Indian division The Red Eagles, McLaren&so., Toronto, 1948

Me too I would be very glad if anyone has something more to add or corrections to do.
Bye
Graziano
