About David Aldea

David Aldea is the co-author of 5th Infantry Brigade in the Falklands (Leo Cooper, 2003) and has written numerous articles, including “Blood and Mud at Goose Green” (Military History Magazine, April 2002). He has also written "The Battle of Mersa Matruh" and "First Battle of Alamein" for Comando Supremo: Italy at War.

The Bologna Division had taken such losses in its attempt to contain the Tobruk garrison that a lesser commander might have called it quits.

The Battle of Mersa Matruh

The 90th Light Division had by this time been reinforced by Bersaglieri troops of Xth and XXIst Infantry Corps, and groups of the 10th Indian Division at the head of Wadi Nagamish came under heavy tank and machine gun fire from the Littorio Armored Division.

Bersaglieri in Action

The Italians were willing, unselfish and good comrades in the front line. There can be no disputing that the achievement of all the Italian units, especially the motorized elements, far outstripped any action of the Italian Army for 100 years. Many Italian generals and officers earned our respect as men as well as soldiers.
